Covid-19 (coronavirus) in Jersey

As you may know, the Société Jersiaise is still closed to the general public, though the Jersey Archive re-opened on June 23rd 2020, with strict booking protocols in place.

Jersey now observes the Level 2 guidance on Covid-19 which advises 1 metre social distancing and meetings of not more than 40 people. We hope not to face a second peak of infections which would again endanger CIFHS members.

The outside visit to St Martin’s Roman Catholic Church on July 27th 2020 has been postponed until 2021. This will enable the required research to be done which will make the visit interesting, given that the Archive has re-opened.

Monday September 28th online meeting at 8pm

I am pleased to announce that this meeting will go ahead as a webinar from the Jersey Archive. We are very grateful to Linda Romeril, who will give a talk on Liberation films from the Archive. It is easy to register to view these on P/Cs or laptops. Go to www.jerseyheritage.org to register on At Home – Heritage Live – webinar programme.

However other meetings for 2020 at the Société Jersiaise are still undecided as it is not yet open to the public nor is it taking outside bookings. Doreen Reed (Vice-President & Meetings Organiser) assures members that she will make every effort to include the meetings postponed since March in our future programme in 2021.

For members with internet access please keep an eye on our website for the latest news on the resumption of our meetings. Please inform the Membership Secretary (cifhs.membership@gmail.com) when you have a new email address. Our notices will also appear in the JEP Diary when it resumes.

May 29th

As you will all know, the Société Jersiaise and the Jersey Archive remain closed to the general public.

The Level 3 guidance on Covid-19 still advises us to stay at home and observe social distancing. We can only hope that the pandemic has receded and that we shall not have to face a second peak of infections which would again endanger CIFHS members.

It is now clear that it is impractical to go ahead with the outside visit to St Martin’s Roman Catholic Church on July 27th 2020. The Government of Jersey has not yet given advice on the holding of meetings even if social distancing can be maintained inside or outside. Some restrictions may be relaxed in the future but the timeframe will be too short (a) to let members know and (b) for members to do the required research to make the visit interesting, given that the Société Jersiaise and the Archive are closed.

Until there is loosening of restrictions on inside meetings, we cannot predict whether we will be able to go ahead with the September 28th meeting at the Jersey Archive and the October 26th meeting at the Société Jersiaise. Doreen Reed (Vice-President & Meetings organiser) assures members that she will make every effort to include the meetings postponed since March in our future programme in 2021.

Timeline PhotosThree days to go...

Starting in the early hours of May 8th you'll be able to experience the frustration, fear, and finally the jubilation of the end of five long years of German Occupation minute by minute as if you were there.

There'll be posts from the troops of Force 135 who came to Liberate the Islands; the reaction of the Germans; and the relief felt by those living in Guernsey and Jersey.

There'll also be photos and film to capture 'two days in May' that will never be forgotten.

March 13th

On March 12th, the Société Jersiaise announced its decision to restrict access to its building. Its room hire facilities to the general public have been cancelled until further notice. It also urges its Sections to postpone their meetings.

Therefore I am sorry to tell you that the 2020 AGM on 30th March will be postponed. We intend to hold the AGM with a shortened agenda to pass the formal business before our next Members’ meeting. We hope that this meeting will be able to take place on Monday 27th April 2020 at the Société Jersiaise as normal.
